Introduction
Harley Davidson, a truly iconic worldwide brand. Ask a non motorcyclist to name a motorcycle manufacturer, and Harley Davidson will often roll off the tongue. Famous for their large capacity V-twin engines with their distinctive potato potato sound, a Harley is a unique way to tour New Zealand where the journey is just as important as the destination.
History
In 1901, William S Harley and Arthur Davidson, started work on a small capacity (116cc) engine that was designed to be attached to a conventional motorcycle. Whilst the engine worked well enough, it was not powerful enough to deal with the often steep hills in Milwaukee, America. The first real Harley Davidson motorcycle appeared in 1903, and this year is considered to be the year in which Harley Davidson was founded. By 1920 Harley Davidson had become the worlds largest motorcycle manufacturer producing over 28,000 machines sold in 67 different countries.
The onset of World War 2 saw Harley Davidson as a preferred supplier of motorcycles for military use to the US and Allied forces with over 90,000 motorcycles been produced for military use. With the advent of the Japanese motorcycle manufacturers during the 1960's and 70's, Harley Davidson came upon some hard times. However they focused on their core values of producing motorcycles with a unique style and sound. Whilst some motorcyclist's will criticise Harley's for not been the fastest, most powerful, lightest, or best handling motorcycles available, they are perhaps missing the point.
